Once administered, protection from the shingles vaccine should last at least 9 years. Two doses, administered 2 to 12 months apart, are required for long-term protection.
Who can receive the vaccine?
- Shingrix, the vaccine that protects against shingles (Herpes Zoster), is offered free of charge to adults 71 years of age and older and immunocompromised adults 18 years of age and older.
- These individuals can be vaccinated regardless of whether they have had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
- While the shingles vaccine is also recommended for adults 50 to 70 years old, it is not free. These individuals can make an appointment in selected community pharmacies.
Why get vaccinated?
- The vaccine reduces the risk of developing shingles.
- The vaccine provides protection for at least 10 years. Two doses of the vaccine are required.
- If you get shingles but have had the vaccine, the pain lasts for a shorter period of time.
- Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself against shingles.
