Procedure for pregnancy termination
Procedural abortion:
A procedural abortion, also known as a surgical abortion, can be done 6 to 14 weeks after your last period.
This service is available one day a week and requires two appointments.
An initial appointment prior to ending the pregnancy is mandatory. Decision-making support can be made available as needed. During the initial appointment, an ultrasound is also performed on-site.
On the day of the procedure, the appointment will last between 1 and 2 hours. You must have someone with you, but that person cannot be present during the procedure itself.
A post-abortion follow-up consultation is available, as needed.
Medication abortion:
Medication abortion, also known as medical abortion, can be used up to 9 weeks after your last period.
This service is available one day a week and requires two appointments.
The process is similar to that of a procedural abortion and each appointment lasts about one hour.
An in-person follow-up appointment is advised and recommended 14 days after taking the medication. The individual can choose between an ultrasound or a blood test.
If I’m under 18 years of age, do I need my parents’ permission to have an abortion?
In Québec, anyone 14 years of age and over has the right to make health-related decisions on their own. In other words, they do not need a parent or a guardian’s permission.
How much does it cost to have an abortion?
If you have a health insurance card (RAMQ), the costs associated with a medication abortion are covered. Services, appointments and medications are therefore free of charge.
If you are not covered by Québec’s public health insurance, please feel free to contact us.
