Abortion

Resources

In Canada, every person has the right to have an abortion if they so choose. This also means that abortions are performed by qualified professionals.

Birthing Centre - Family Planning Clinic

The midwives at the Lac-Saint-Louis Birthing Centre Family Planning Clinic offer safe, respectful and compassionate abortion services. These services are intended for those who wish to end a pregnancy in the first trimester.

The midwives at the Family Planning Clinic are reachable by calling a dedicated phone number. Please leave a message at 514-230-5496 and we will call you back within 24 hours. If you are considering note continuing your pregnancy, we recommend that you contact us as soon as you think you may be pregnant. The earlier the medication is taken the more effective it is.

Why choose the Birthing Centre?

The midwives at the Birthing Centre are trained to provide the required care with skill and compassion. They ensure personalized follow-ups and make themselves available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, before, during and up to 6 weeks after the abortion.

This service allows clients to benefit from support that is respectful and confidential in an environment that is welcoming and safe. As with all the services they offer, midwives work in partnership with health care facilities that can take over care if and when necessary.

What does the procedure entail?

A medication abortion involves the administration of two medications (mifepristone and misoprostol), which can be taken at home or at the clinic, based on the preferences and needs of the individual.

What’s involved in not continuing your pregnancy with the help of our midwives?

After you leave your message on the Family Planning Clinic’s answering machine, a midwife will call you back within 24 hours. She will check to make sure that you are eligible for the service.
Depending on your situation and your needs, the process may include the following:

  • Assessment appointment to confirm your eligibility (an ultrasound is not always necessary);
  • Receiving a prescription or the required medications along with clear instructions;
  • Follow-up, either remotely or in-person.

The midwives will be there at every step and will take the time to answer your questions. If you prefer, it is sometimes possible to do everything remotely (especially when an ultrasound is not necessary for those with regular menstrual cycles who know the date of their last period).

If I’m under 18 years of age, do I need my parents’ permission to have an abortion?

In Québec, anyone 14 years of age and over may consent to care that is required by their state of health. In other words, they do not need a parent or a guardian’s permission.

What is the cost of an abortion when done through midwives?

If you have a health insurance card (RAMQ), the costs associated with a medication abortion are covered. Any services, consultations and medications are therefore free.

If you are not covered by Québec’s public health insurance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
