Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding Policy

Exclusive breastfeeding is associated with many health benefits for both the baby and the mother.

We have adopted a policy to encourage, protect and support breastfeeding.

You will therefore receive breastfeeding support from our various caregivers.

Did you know?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding for up to 2 years and beyond.

Pacifiers (soothers) are not recommended until your milk supply is well established and your baby has learned to latch and suck correctly.

Be Ready to Breastfeed!

To prepare for possible breastfeeding challenges, watch this bilingual educational video created by our CIUSSS!

It includes testimonials from mothers and expert opinions on apprehensions and challenges encountered when breastfeeding!

Baby-Friendly Designation

The Lac-Saint-Louis Birthing Centre, the 4 CLSCs (Lac-Saint-Louis, Pierrefonds, Dorval-Lachine and LaSalle) and the St. Mary’s Hospital Centre all have their Baby-Friendly designation. The Lakeshore General Hospital and Hôpital de LaSalle are working towards theirs.

What is the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI)?

  • The Baby-Friendly Initiative is a program that reflects the continuum of care and services across our healthcare system. Publicly-funded healthcare facilities such as hospitals, birthing centres and community health centres that offer pre and postnatal services are eligible for BFI assessment and designation in Canada.
  • To be BFI designated, facilities must adhere to and fulfill the requirements of the 10 Steps for Successful Breastfeedingas outlined by WHO/UNICEF and adapted by the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada.   This process is evaluated by a team of BFI assessors.
