What is it?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) and multifactor authentication are validation and authentication mechanisms required of users who want to gain access to information systems.
How does it work?
For two-factor authentication (2FA), also known as 2-Step Verification, users must verify their identity by entering their password as well as a second verification method.
Multifactor authentication, on the other hand, requires at least 2 other forms of identity verification.
Examples of validation
- One-time secret code sent through SMS, email, mobile app or secondary device
- Personal security question that only you know the answer to
- Facial recognition or biometric authentication
Why is this important?
This additional layer of security is effective at protecting against identify theft. Anyone with a valid password is denied access to an application if they are unable to validate their identity through this additional authentication mechanism.

The MSSS recommends using Microsoft Authenticator for two-step verification.
