Child and Youth Ethics service
Ethics consultations for child and youth services (i.e., for all minors) provide support for child/youth mental health services, child welfare/youth protection services, and general healthcare services. This involves assistance in the identification of ethical concerns, examinations of how children/youth’s best interests can be defined in specific situations, discussions about parental roles, and how young people should be involved in discussions and decisions that affect them.
Pediatric Ethics Committee for child/youth mental health services
Purpose: To promote a high ethical standard of clinical practice with children, youth, and families within the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.
Mandate & Role: The primary role of the committee is to (a) advise on policy development, (b) promote educational activities to address priority ethical concerns in child mental health, and (c) provide advice or a formal ethics consultation to clinicians or administrators, or any other person or group that addresses the committee, for a specific clinical case or problem. The committee will work collaboratively with the Clinical Ethicist for Child, Adolescent and Family Services, who is ordinarily the ‘first line’ consultant that should be contacted about ethical concerns. The Committee and the Ethicist will promote a reciprocal advisory relationship.
