Paying attention to how your child is feeling can help you to give them the support they need before the situation gets worse. Here are some tips for getting back to school!
- Gradually return to a schedule that is similar to your weekly schedule during the school year.
- Start to sort and purchase school supplies as soon as you receive the list. Get your child involved in the preparations while making it fun!
- Talk about back-to-school time and ask open-ended questions to get your child or teen to talk about how they feel.
- Recognize their concerns and normalize them. Explain that it’s normal to feel stress when facing changes and new situations! Discuss some strategies for reducing stress with them.
- Help them to find strategies to manage their feelings of anxiety. You can try anchoring and/or breathing techniques.
