About the ECHO ED Telementoring Program (FR only)

Biography

Summary and Learning Objectives

Howard Steiger, Ph. D. Howard Steiger is a full professor with the Psychiatry Department and an associate member of the Psychology Department at McGill University. For over 30 years, he directed the Douglas Institute Eating Disorders Continuum (EDC), where he continues to act as a clinical and academic consultant for the program.  The EDC offers a full range of Inpatient, Day Treatment and Outpatient services to adolescents and adults affected by eating disorders and their families. An active clinician, researcher, and teacher, Dr. Steiger has published 190 articles and chapters on the eating disorders. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of EDs, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders, and has been Associate Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders, President of the ED Research Society, and Co-President of the Québec Charter for a Healthy and Diversified Body Image. Along with Dr. Booij, he is the ECHO co-organizer for 2023–2024.

Eating disorders are generally accompanied by other mental health issues in most of those who are affected. Furthermore, the presence of a comorbidity is often, if inconsistently, associated with less favourable treatment outcomes.  However, no evidence-based protocol exists in the field of eating disorders to orient the treatment of coexisting mental health issues.  This presentation looks at the principles that are part of the existing consensus on managing psychiatric comorbidities in the context of eating disorders. It will look at the recommended approaches in cases where the comorbidity is considered to be entirely separate from the eating disorder, in cases where it is a consequence of the eating disorder, and in cases where it interacts with the eating disorder in such a way that it interferes with the treatment outcome.  One key question is to determine how to treat the comorbidity without taking attention away issues related to the eating disorder.

This presentation will give participants:

  1. A better understanding of the comorbidity trends among people with eating disorders and the implications of that comorbidity on treatment outcomes.
  2. A look at current best practices for managing comorbidity in the context of eating disorders.
  3. An update on the use of monitoring measures to guide treatment planning in the context of co-occurring mental health conditions.
