Ice storm: Are you prepared... and watch out for carbon monoxyde (CO)

Ice storms can cause power outages. In these situations, many people use space heaters or generators. To protect your health, use these devices safely: never use them indoors.

Did you know that carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible killer? CO is invisible, odorless, and highly toxic. In an enclosed space, it can build up quickly and become deadly in a matter of minutes.

In the event of a power outage:

  • Never use appliances designed for outdoor use (BBQs, stoves, propane appliances) indoors.
  • Always place the generator outdoors, away from doors, windows, and air intakes.
  • Never leave an engine running in a garage, even if the door is open.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector near possible sources and check regularly to make sure it is working.

See the documents below concerning the dangers of carbon monoxide.
