Let’s talk dysphagia…

Did you know that a significant percentage of the residents living in our long-term care facilities have a swallowing disorder? June is Dysphagia Awareness Month, a great opportunity to learn more about this often underrecognized symptom.

Leading causes of dysphagia

  • Stroke
  • Neurodegenerative disorders (such as dementia)
  • Age-related frailty

Some signs of dysphagia

  • Coughing during meals
  • A “wet” voice
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Weight loss
  • Significant fatigue while eating

Nutritionists play a key role in managing dysphagia. They assess swallowing, adapt food textures and consistencies appropriately, and work closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure residents receive safe and enjoyable meals. They aim for the least restrictive approach possible so that residents receive the nutrition they need while preserving the pleasure of eating, which is key to quality of life in CHSLDs.
