Once administered, protection from the shingles vaccine should last at least 9 years. Two doses, administered 2 to 12 months apart, are required for long-term protection.
Who can receive the vaccine?
- Shingrix, the vaccine that protects against shingles (Herpes Zoster), is offered free of charge to adults 80 years of age and older and immunocompromised adults 18 years of age and older.
- These individuals can be vaccinated regardless of whether they have had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
- While the shingles vaccine is also recommended for adults 50 to 79 years old, it is not free. These individuals can make an appointment at the CLSC de Pierrefonds or in select community pharmacies.
